Blending At The Beginning is an excellent program for those children ready to begin
a phonics program. Early reading and phonics instruction complete the total program. A readiness factor enters in with the
preschool and kindergarten age child. Some children at this age
may not be ready to remember the letter names and connect the letter sound correspondence.
- Is your child able to name and recognize the letters of the alphabet?
- Is your child able to name the consonant letter sounds?
- Is your child able to connect the alphabet letter with the corresponding sound?
If your child is not ready, put our reading program on hold. Sharing books with your child is
extremely beneficial at this point and when your child is ready to begin our program. Early reading and phonics
activities include basic alphabet activities. Expose your child to the alphabet. Make learning the alphabet and consonant
sounds fun by making letters in sand or out of clay, cereal, or objects. Choose a letter for a period of time and
name things around the house with that begin with that letter sound. Cut pictures out of magazines beginning with that sound.
Try making an alphabet book of sounds together.
Most importantly, please be patient and always praise your child for his or her effort.
Never go beyond what your child is able to handle.
