Phonics and reading comprehension go hand and hand. Blending
At The Beginning gives the early reader a vehicle to identify unknown words to assist the reader in understanding
what is being read. Extracting meaning from reading is the ultimate goal. Phonics through Blending At The Beginning
is the path to achieve that goal.
Developing reading comprehension skills is just as important
as word identification. When reading together, you can help your child gain meaning from reading by doing one or
two of the following with some, but not all, stories.
- encourge your child to look at the book cover and picture and make predictions
about what the story is about
- ask your child what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story
- ask your child to name their favorite part
- ask your child to name the characters
- talk about the problem and how it was solved
- ask the child if they like the book
- ask who, what, where, when, why questions
